Songwriting Contest Rules and Timing

  • All songwriters (professional or amateur) are eligible for this contest. You may contribute to/submit as many songs as you would like but you/your team can only win once (1st, 2nd or 3rd place). By Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 5:00 PM, with your name and telephone number clearly identified, submit in-person your song on a non-returnable computer jump drive at one of the following three Buddy Roger’s Music stores. Keep a back-up copy for your file.

  • All musical genres will be accepted. Your submission needs to include clearly typed, original words (not an adaptation of an existing song) and an original melody sung either acapella or accompanied with an instrument(s). All songs cannot exceed 3 minutes.You do not need to submit a musical score. The lyrics and music may be written by one person or a team of people. Ultimately, the 1st place winning person/team in each of the three age categories will have his/her/their song scored and produced.To receive some feedback on your song before the submission deadline, you may visit any of the three Buddy Roger’s Music stores as many times as you would like.

    The songs will be evaluated/judged individually by five accomplished songwriters/musicians, with various musical experiences/ backgrounds. Using a 7 to 1, Excellent to Poor rating scale, the lyrics and music will be evaluated/judged on the dimensions listed below and averaged across the judges. With each age category and across all musical genres, the song with the most points will win 1st place, followed by 2nd place and 3rd place.If two or more songs receive the same amount of points/average, an additional professional musician will be used to make the final selection.

    Lyrics
    • Relatively equal treatment of each of the four food retailers (Busken, Graeter’s, LaRosa’s and Skyline Chili)
    • Clear/overall theme of the song (reflected in the lyrics and title)
    • Unique/fun references to the four food retailers

    Music
    • Attractive melody that complements the lyrics
    • Appealing rhythm/beat that complements the lyrics
    • Appropriate tempo/speed that complements the lyrics

  • The lyrics of your song must be positive/in good taste. Songs with derogatory/negative references to the retailers as well as written non-original lyrics or music will be discarded.

  • Each age category (12-17, 18-24 and 25+) will have a 1st place winner ($500 Buddy Roger’s Music gift card for one person/team plus have his/her/their song produced and possibly performed at various venues throughout Greater Cincinnati), 2nd place winner ($250 Buddy Roger’s Music gift card for one person/team) and 3rd place winner ($150 Buddy Roger’s Music gift card for one person/team). The winners will be notified no later than Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 5 PM.

  • The lyricists’ and composers’ names will be attributed to the songs. However, all possible publishing/recording/performance/promotional rights to the songs will be held by Buddy Roger’s Music.

  • All Buddy Roger’s Music store employees, teachers and affiliates are in-eligible for this contest.
